Prep notebook: South Bay still solid track meet - The Daily BreezePublished by
The elite South Bay track and field schools faced a scheduling quandary this week. They
could either support the local South Bay Championships this Friday at
West Torrance or go to the prestigious Mount San Antonio College Relays
this Saturday. This dilemma came about when the Arcadia Invitational and
Mt. SAC Relays were each pushed back one week due to the leap year.
West coach Kirsten Green did not move her meet back, forcing some teams
to make a decision. For St. Mary's Academy, Serra and St. Bernard, perhaps the
three most powerful programs in the area, it was a no-brainer to go to
Mt. SAC. "Most people go to Mt. SAC if they can get in," St. Mary's
co-coach Ray King said. "It was an automatic decision for us. We were
not going to split our squad; that's too confusing. And it's a chance
to run at Mt. SAC, on that track. Most of our kids when they hear `Mt.
SAC' want to participate in that." The rest of the South Bay will be at the South Bay
Championships, and Green likely is happy with the commitments,
considering her main goal was to bring together the Bay, Ocean and
Pioneer Leagues. "To be honest, she didn't have to make any accommodations,"
said Carson coach Amrit Lal, who is bringing his state medalist
contenders, Starasia Childs and Jonathan Byrd, to the South Bay
