FSU’s Dix qualifies, but suffers injury

With a grimace and a quick grasp of his right hamstring, Walter Dix’s ending to his storied Florida State career is once again uncertain.

The seven-time NCAA champion sprinter felt a familiar pain about 20 meters shy of the 100-meter finish line during the Seminole Invitational on Saturday.

Yet he finished in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 10:41 and was one of 11 Seminoles to qualify. That group included two-sport athlete Michael Ray Garvin who won the 200 meters in 20.68 seconds.

“That says a lot about him,” FSU track coach Bob Braman said of Dix’s dash.

The senior who has led FSU to two consecutive NCAA men’s outdoor track and field titles will have a better idea about the specifics of his injury — and his FSU future — after he undergoes an MRI on Monday.
